ISTANBUL · LUXURY MALL AND RESIDENCE PROJECT · LASER-CUT SOLID BRASS, HAND-BENT · TWO WALLS

Brass Fluid was designed at the request of the architects of a luxury mall and residence project in Istanbul for the marble walls on either side of the WC entrance in a private area. One of three works we produced for the project, it consists of two complementary pieces flanking the doorway.
We wanted to turn an everyday point of passage into a threshold. The two works answer each other across the door: one gathers densely near the doorway and opens upward, while the other undulates downward toward the floor. Against the calm surface of the marble, the thin brass strips read as a single flow, like traces left by water or wind.
The work sits close to the tradition that uses the curving line as a language of surface: in the line running from the fluid contours of Art Nouveau to contemporary wall reliefs, material sheds its weight and turns into movement. The satin brass catches the recessed ceiling lights, leaving thin glints along its edges and warm reflections in the polished marble floor.
The making
After the sketch and computer drawing, strips about 6 cm wide were laser-cut from solid brass sheet. There is no plating and no steel core; every strip is solid brass.
Each strip was bent by hand, one by one, in the workshop into its flowing, fluted form. On site, full-size paper templates were taped to the marble walls and the layout was rehearsed; the strips were then fixed to the wall with slotted pins following the templates.
