WITH EG MOBILYA · 2021 · STEEL ARMATURE, FIBRE CAST, SATIN BRASS FINISH · EMPERADOR DARK MARBLE PLINTH

The Mask was designed with EG Mobilya for the under-stair space of a private home. Between floating marble treads, the warm light of brass slat panels and a white-pebble planting bed, the brief called for a single sculpture to anchor the space.
The sculpture is a face split by a gap at eye level: a lid-like piece above, and below it a hand raising its index finger to the lips in a gesture of silence. In a stairwell full of everyday comings and goings, the gesture creates a pause and slows passers-by for a moment.
With its Emperador Dark marble plinth the work stands 185–190 cm tall; the sculpture alone is about 125–130 cm. The satin brass surface catches the light of the panels and speaks the same language as the warm tones of the space.
The making
The form was first modelled on the computer and construction drawings were made for the steel armature. After the proportions were tested on a small clay prototype, the full-size steel armature was welded.
In the studio the armature was built up in clay, layer by layer. A silicone mould and fibre mother shell were taken from the finished clay sculpture, and the cast was made in fibre. The form was finished in satin brass and set on a 60 cm Emperador Dark marble plinth, with the steel post hidden inside it.
